If It's Not YouSitting at the backseat of a taxi, she found herself wrapped in Wendy’s arms. She was plainly exhausted – from work, and from feelings – and she couldn’t help but lean into her warmth. Her head relaxed on her shoulders, one hand on Wendy’s back and another pressed against her wrist. Her heart tugged and ached but all she could do is to snuggle closer, even if it did nothing to soothe her.
She closed her eyes and suddenly everything seemed like a movie scene. She is reminded of her favorite film. It’s one of those that had mixed reviews when it came out with its raw acting and limited budget. The story followed two characters with a love that was doomed from the start. A whole twenty minutes of the film is dedicated to a cab ride with short yet meaningful dialogue and another twenty, for one of the main character’s speechless musings. Both scenes broke viewers’ hearts and it affected Irene in a way she did not understand.
Back then, all she knew was that everything felt so real. Had she anticipated the heartbreak that was to come?
Fate must really hate her because now, a month after saying goodbye to Wendy and five years since the first movie, Irene is inside a local cinema watching the equally heartbreaking sequel.
